To bypass hardware hand-shaking on 9 pin connectors, tie pins 7 and 8 together and pins 6, 1, and 4 together.  

To bypass hardware hand-shaking on 25 pin connectors, tie pins 4 and 5 together and pins 6, 8, and 20 together.
