HTS Generic Operations Model

HTS Generic Operations Model

In order to see how each piece fits into the puzzle -- you have to have a model.

Many of the models that we have seen are very good.  Others fail for several reasons:

  1. Too simple
  2. Too much detail
  3. A model from a different industry
  4. Too many buzzwords

Too Simple

If your model is too simple, then you can't see the entire "big picture" or all of the pieces of the puzzle.

Too Much Detail

If a model you are trying to adapt has too much detail then you get bogged down with many irrelevant discussions.  However, it is much easier to erase and modify than it is to think-up and create.

Industry Specific

If you are NOT in the industry that the model was designed for -- then this is another example of too much detail.

We don't think that our generic model is better for a specific industry than their industry specific models.  For example, if you are a semiconductor company, we suggest you start with the Sematech model instead of ours.  But if you are not a semiconductor company, then we think you might want to start with our model and use the Sematech and other models to help you define your own model.

Too Many Buzzwords

Some models you wonder if they’re just trying to model buzzwords.    They have every buzzword on there that you could think of -- and then some.  Not that the ideas behind the buzzwords are bad -- it's the focus.  Are you more interested in what they are saying OR how they are saying it?  We focus on the wheat -- instead of the chaff.

Let's just say that we have left a lot of room on our generic model so that people can add all the buzzwords they want!

The HTS Generic Operations Model

We developed this generic operations model so that we see where every topic we discuss fits into the "big picture".

Note that we tried to make this model not too simple and not too complex -- just right.  It should serve as a starting point for companies that are designing models for their industry or organization.
